At some point, everyone will require medical attention. A good health insurance plan covers both your regular, necessary care and your protection against unforeseen emergency expenses. In our rating, we considered the network, price, coverage, and other factors.

1.    Aetna

Rating: 5 out of 5.

In the US, a large selection of health insurance plans are offered by Aetna Inc, a CVS Health company. They are experts in Medicare, benefits plans, and employer-based plans.

Customers can search for a plan on the website or locate a physician, dentist, or eyecare professional. Additionally, policyholders have access to a mobile insurance application where they may manage their benefits, examine their personal health records, and more. Additionally, a nurse is available to chat with you at any time, every day.

Consumers can choose from a variety of individual, family, Medicare, and employer health insurance plans through Aetna. Additionally, you have the option to join an HSA, or health savings account, in which you can save money tax-free for your insurance deductible and other healthcare costs. Aetna has so many insurance options that you will need to visit the website to thoroughly investigate them all.

2.    Blue Cross Blue Shield

Rating: 5 out of 5.

In addition to the United States, the Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Association provides private health insurance coverage in more than 170 other nations. A BCBS company provides health insurance to more than 100 million Americans. There are 36 different insurance firms that make up the BCBS Association.

Numerous helpful member services are provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield to its customers. You can ask questions, research medical procedure costs, evaluate your individual plan, modify your coverage, submit claims, track their progress, check your balance, request a replacement member ID card, and access all your benefits and services on the website.

One advantage of selecting Blue Cross Blue Shield is that most medical facilities and doctors accept the insurance, making it straightforward to choose a convenient location for treatment. Based on the association’s financial stability and decades of demonstrated experience, you can make your decision with confidence.

However, given that it is divided into regional corporations that can operate independently, the company’s scale might also be a disadvantage. Because of this, it could be challenging to locate precise information on the BCBS website. Customers who want specialized information must instead specify their local company. The scale of the business might also make it difficult to provide adequate customer care.

3.    UnitedHealthcare

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The largest health insurer in the United States, UnitedHealth Group, includes UnitedHealthcare. 8 One of UHC’s unique advantages is the availability of immediate online care. This includes the capability to access online pharmacy services, call a nurse on a hotline, and take part in wellness initiatives. Members can access the website around-the-clock to look up doctors, make appointments, submit claims, and even interact with medical professionals on the phone. Additionally, you may enjoy all of these advantages while on the road thanks to a convenient mobile app.

People who want the option to control their health care electronically should choose UHC. HSAs and FSAs are accessible under HMO and PPO insurance. Hearing aids, eye therapies (including Lasik), and smoking cessation programs all have member discounts available. Over 1.3 million doctors and other healthcare professionals make up UHC’s sizable, preferred provider network. Additionally, UHC provides HMO and PPO Medicare Advantage plans.

4.    Anthem

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Anthem offers a wide variety of plans and products while being a relatively young company in the field of insurance companies.

The majority of Anthem’s individual and group health insurance policies are affordable. Given today’s high healthcare expenses, this feature is essential for many people and makes insurance affordable for even those with tight budgets.

Additionally, Anthem policyholders get a variety of discounts on goods and services. Members receive discounts on a variety of items, including groceries, cosmetics and skincare, medical weight loss programs, and pet health insurance. Their efforts to improve their health and wellness can be greatly aided by these discounts.

You might find better, more affordable family insurance plans from other providers if you’re searching for a complete plan for your family. Anthem just can’t compete with other insurance companies when it comes to family plans, despite its flexibility and the variety of options it offers.

Customers frequently complain about the company’s customer assistance not recognizing them in the system, losing IDs, refusing to settle claims, and other standard customer support problems.

5.    Cigna

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Because they provide average-priced premiums and a wide choice of benefits and services, Cigna is recognized as a strong healthcare provider in the regions where the firm operates. However, as with many health insurance companies, local and regional experiences can vary.

The main Cigna website is where you can start the quote process. There, you may find links to local and state-specific suppliers as well as a detailed explanation of their services and goods. The processes for claims and quotations are typically more transparent than normal.

In all their coverage areas and states, hospitals and medical offices accept Cigna plans broadly. Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) and Health Maintenance Organization are two types of insurance plans available (HMO). While HMO policies only provide out-of-network care during emergencies, PPO plans typically cover out-of-network doctors. The Cigna plans offer access to a network of licensed dentists throughout its covered territories for dental and vision insurance.

When compared to its rivals, Cigna performs admirably thanks to moderate premiums, simple and effective websites, and robust telehealth benefits. For some people, a barrier will be the lack of nationwide coverage. Customers are very satisfied in the states where Cigna does business.

6.    Oscar Health

Rating: 3 out of 5.

A new player in the health insurance market, Oscar Health is a private health insurance firm that is having a significant impact. The Startup was established in 2012 and currently has a valuation of $2.7 billion, partly because of its capacity to use technology to lower the cost of healthcare insurance.

The Oscar Center, which was established in November 2016 in collaboration with Mount Sinai Health System, gives members access to a primary care office as well as free yoga and prenatal care workshops. An application that can be downloaded for Android, iOS, or the Oscar online app includes a doctor on call service that is available around-the-clock as part of membership. With the “Doctor on Call” function of the Oscar app, patients may easily tap it to seek a callback from the doctor within minutes. Prescriptions can be sent to your pharmacy through the doctor-on-call app.

You can visit any doctor of your choosing, including specialists, without a recommendation. The approach is built on simplicity and places a focus on technology and the entire client experience.

A “Concierge Team” that consists of three care guides and a certified nurse provides clinical healthcare and responds to consumer inquiries oversees handling customer care. Direct appointment scheduling is available with partners that are preferred providers. Through a clinical dashboard that compiles patient histories into a single platform, Oscar healthcare preferred providers have access to patient information.

Oscar Health has a distinctive viewpoint in that it seeks to provide its policyholders with affordable health insurance as well as to engage them by providing rewards for being healthy (step tracking via a free wearable, cash rewards for getting a flu shot, two free primary care visits, and free generic medications). You can choose a smaller deductible if you pay a greater premium, depending on your financial situation and healthcare needs. Oscar Insurance should be taken into consideration even if it will take some time for the new insurer to establish a solid reputation.

7.    Kaiser Permanente

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Kaiser Permanente is a managed care organization, not merely a health insurance provider, where customers can buy a health insurance plan and receive medical treatment at one of the Kaiser Foundation Hospitals or other healthcare facilities. In nine states—Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Virginia, Maryland, California, Oregon, Washington, Ohio, and the District of Columbia—they now provide medical care and health insurance.

You can purchase a health insurance plan from Kaiser that allows you to access Kaiser’s network of medical professionals. Classic plans, essential plans, HSA plans, and advantage plans are some of the health insurance options.

A Health Savings Plan (HSA) option can be added to any Kaiser health insurance plan. This is a savings account where you can put money aside for medical expenses or other deductible costs. The money is tax-free if you use it for medical expenditures. The deductibles for the HSA-qualified plans are $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for families.

Customers can access tools on the Kaiser Permanente website to manage their healthcare. To locate a doctor in your neighborhood who is the best fit for you, you can search doctors and locations. Listings of doctors’ education, credentials, and specialties are also available. You can check on vaccinations or fill a prescription before going by calling the 24/7 Away from Home Travel Line at 951.268.3900 or using the care while traveling website. You can also access online resources for wellbeing, such as drug encyclopedias, health guides, and links to courses and programs.

8.    HCSC

Rating: 2.5 out of 5.

The Health Care Service Corporation is a “local” organization that provides the advantages of a global one. As long as you live in one of the five states where their plans are offered, HCSC is a great option because they take pride in being customer-owned. Finding a plan online is straightforward, there are many advantages of healthy living programs to take advantage of, and customer service is effective when it is offered.

Shopping for insurance during the enrollment period is comparatively simple according to HCSC. Every state that is served has a separate website, and the application process is simple to follow. Potential consumers can utilize the 24/7 service called Blue Directions to ask for help selecting the best plan.

A health assessment tool, smoking cessation assistance, weight-loss programs, maternity programs, fitness programs, and a round-the-clock nurse hotline are all examples of healthy living initiatives. Members can also receive mobile alerts through text message or email, including information about claims, exercise and fitness advice, reminders for taking prescription medications, diabetes diet advice, and advice on maintaining a heart-healthy diet.

9.    Molina Healthcare

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Residents of 15 U.S. states, including California, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin, have a lot of choice in Molina Healthcare. Molina’s preferred provider network includes more than a million participating medical professionals and organizations in the states where it conducts business.

Molina provides an extensive array of services and benefits together with premiums that are below average. However, concerns about customer service vary locally and geographically as they do with other health insurance companies.

The majority of clients will start the quotation process on Molina’s main website, which provides a concise summary of its services and goods and connects potential clients to their local and state-specific suppliers. The quotation and claims processes stood out among its counterparts for the simplicity and clarity of its wording.

In the states where it is offered, Molina does well and is a widely liked option, particularly for individuals and families with modest incomes. Although it may have strayed a little from the charitable objectives of its founder, it is still a good-value supplier with cheaper quotes. For some people, the absence of comprehensive nationwide coverage could be a disadvantage, but it offers an excellent selection of plans at affordable prices.

10. Harvard Pilgrim Health Care

Rating: 2 out of 5.

The nonprofit Harvard Pilgrim Health Care offers numerous services to the neighborhood, including the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation, which helps low-income families in the area.

Massachusetts, Maine, and New Hampshire all provide individual and family health insurance plans from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. Although Harvard Pilgrim Health Care offers other services in Connecticut, individual plans are not currently available there. Connecticut is the only state that offers Medicare plans. Most of the plans are HMO-POS, however in some locations they also provide PPO plans thanks to a cooperation.

We chose the plans offered in Massachusetts, home of Harvard Pilgrim’s corporate offices, for the purposes of this analysis. The five plans for the state that we located on the list are all HMO plans. Although Harvard Pilgrim and United Health Group collaborate to offer PPO plans, our search for such choices in this state came up nothing. In actuality, there weren’t as many options for policies as we had anticipated from such a sizable insurance provider.

As an HMO, Harvard Pilgrim handles claims processing directly between the insurance department and their affiliated provider. Processing claims will typically be quicker and simpler as a result.

Network claims are only paid out in an emergency and processing these claims may take longer. One of the few areas where the company performs poorly is in the handling of claims.

Low deductible plans are provided by Harvard Pilgrim, a company affiliated with a prominent medical school, albeit the cost of the monthly premiums for these plans is somewhat high. They have an excellent reputation and perform well across the board, so anyone seeking for an HMO plan should definitely add them to their comparison list.
